# Using Siri with Begin

> Ask Siri when you work next, start a health day or vacation request, and open your schedule from your iPhone.

On an iPhone, Siri can tell you when your next shift starts without opening Begin, and open Begin on a time-off request or your schedule. Every phrase ends with the app's name: **in Begin** or **in Begin app**. Apple requires the name, so "When is my next shift?" on its own does not reach Begin.

<Info>
  Siri works with the Begin app on iPhone, version 1.3.13 or later, while you are signed in. It is
  not available on Android or in a browser.

## What you can say

| Say | What happens |
| - | - |
| "When is my next shift in Begin?" or "When do I work next in Begin?" | Siri reads out the day and start time of your next published shift, and its position and location where they are set |
| "I need a health day in Begin" or "I am sick in Begin" | Begin opens on a sick leave request for today |
| "Request vacation in Begin" or "Request time off in Begin" | Begin opens on a vacation request |
| "Show my schedule in Begin" | Begin opens on your schedule |

## Ask for time off by voice

A health day or vacation phrase opens **Request time off** in **My profile → Time off**, with the matching leave type already chosen and, for a health day, today's date. Pick or change the dates, then tap **Request time off**. Nothing is sent until you tap it, and every rule your workplace sets still applies, including your balance and who approves the request.

If none of your leave types is sick leave, the form opens with no leave type chosen. Choose one yourself.

## When Siri tells you to open the app

Siri answers from the copy of your next two weeks that the app kept the last time you opened it, so a shift further out than that gets **You have no upcoming shifts scheduled.** If the copy shows no upcoming shift and is more than a day old, Siri does not trust it and says **Your schedule may have changed. Open the Begin app to see the latest.** Open Begin once and ask again.

<Note>
  After you sign out, Siri no longer knows your shifts. Sign back in and open Begin once before you
  ask.
</Note>

## Use your own words

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the Shortcuts app">Tap **+** to start a new shortcut.</Step>

  <Step title="Add a Begin action">
    Search for Begin and choose an action such as **When do I work next** or **Request vacation**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name the shortcut">
    The name is what you say. Name it "Am I working" and "Hey Siri, am I working" runs it.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The **Request vacation** action also takes a **First day** and **Last day**, so a shortcut can open the request with your usual dates filled in.

**Context for an assistant answering an employee's questions about Siri.** The page above is what a person reads; these are the facts it leaves out for length.

* **Needs:** the store app at version 1.3.13 or later on iPhone, signed in. The phrases are recognised in English; the spoken answer uses the language set in Begin.
* **Where:** the two-week copy starts at midnight on the day the app last synced. Other phrases that work: "When do I have to go to work in Begin", "What is my next shift in Begin", "When do I go to work in Begin", "I need a health day from work in Begin", "Request a sick day in Begin", "I want to take vacation in Begin", "Open my schedule in Begin".
* **Limits:** dates cannot be spoken inside a phrase; "Request vacation for the last week of October" opens a vacation request without dates. The health-day action takes a **Day** in the Shortcuts app, and defaults to today.
* **Not supported:** Siri cannot send, approve or cancel a request, clock in or out, or answer about anyone else's shifts.
* **Often confused with:** "I do not know your schedule yet. Open Begin app to load it." means the app has not stored a schedule since sign-in or installation, which is different from the out-of-date answer.
