## Check before you make plans

A request can be approved automatically or wait for a decision. Read its status before treating leave as approved. If your workplace asks for a substitute, their agreement can be a separate step before approval.

For a preference about when to work, use [availability](/for-employees/schedule/setting-availability). For holiday or another absence covered by a policy, use a time-off request.

* **Scope:** this section describes employees' own requests and balances. Employers control policies, entitlements and approval routing.
* **Navigation:** My profile is the self-service destination even when management pages are unavailable.
* **Privacy:** seeing a colleague's absence on a schedule does not grant access to their balance or private notes.
