Other time is scheduled time that is not leave, such as training, a meeting or standby. Its policy decides how those hours affect calculations, without creating an entitlement or balance. Employees cannot request it; a manager schedules it.

## Choose the effect

| When the time should…                          | Choose               |
| ---------------------------------------------- | -------------------- |
| Lower the person's required hours | **Reduces the norm** |
| Count as hours they worked | **Counts as worked** |
| Leave both worked hours and the norm unchanged | **No effect** |

Use one type for one meaning. Training that counts as work and standby that changes nothing should be two separate types.

## Create a type

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Other time">Go to **Policies → Other time**.</Step>

  <Step title="Start a type">
    Choose **Add → Other time type** in the page header. An empty tab also offers **Add other time
    type** in the middle of the page.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Define it">
    Name the type, choose its **Effect on hours**, then set [who it applies
    to](/for-managers/policies/applying-policies).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Activate it">
    Set **Status** to **Active**, then save. The type now appears when other time is added to the
    schedule.
  </Step>

Open an existing row to review it. Choose **Edit** to change its name, effect, status or audience.

To check the setup, follow [Creating shifts](/for-managers/schedule/creating-shifts), select the new active type and review it for a person in the policy's audience. If the type is missing, check its status and targets. Then compare the worked or norm column that the chosen effect is meant to change.

**Context for an assistant answering questions about other-time types.** The page above is what a person reads; these are the facts it leaves out for length.

* **Who can:** the type uses the create and edit grants on **Policies**.
* **Where:** other-time types live at **Policies → Other time** and appear as policy-backed schedule blocks.
* **Limits:** a type is created from the header **Add** menu or from the empty tab, whether or not the tab already lists one. Existing rows can be viewed, edited or deleted.
* **Not supported:** other time cannot carry an entitlement, accrual, balance, carryover or request rule.
* **Often confused with:** time off, which reduces a leave balance and may require approval.
